Visiting Jardin de la Maison d’Edith, visitors are taken back to the beginning of the last century to discover the ingenuity of its designers. Beyond just the decor, all the elements that make it up have a functional use in the industrial production of rope at the beginning of the century on our island.
You will learn all about the history of this forgotten industrial treasure, ie making rope from choca, through the life of this family of small-scale farmers as told by a member of the family. You will visit the hundred-year-old Creole house with its beautifully preserved furniture from that era. You will also learn about the value of choca, an invasive plant today that was so useful back then! Jardin de la Maison d’Edith has been listed as a “Remarkable Garden” by the Cultural Affairs Department to encourage and recognise the important conservation work carried out there. The barometer pool, the gigantic schefflera plant, the old water tank transformed into a swimming pool and the stairs made from volcanic rock are just some of the curiosities waiting to be discovered. As for your guide who lives and breathes history, he will take you on a journey back in time. Tours take place one Saturday every month at 9.30am. An absolute must!
Coming up from Saint-Denis: At the RSMA (Adapted Military Service Regiment) follow the signs to “La Montagne”. Climb up the winding road. At the top of the ramp, take the first right. Signs and landmarks: sign for St Bernard restaurant, léproserie (leper colony). The road is called Chemin de la Vigie which becomes Chemin Neuf, then Chemin Commins (it’s the same road). You will drive past a florist, a recycling centre, a housing estate (“Lotissement Gaud”) and new blocks of flats (SHLMR) The road descends slightly and then climbs again As you climb, you will find yourself in front of a block of flats on the right with a big white gate (there is a small sign - “Les Jardins d’Aline”). Go towards this gate as if you were going to enter it, but immediately to your right you will see a small road. Next to the flats you will see the "Nice Pizza” pizza van parked on the road side (on the right). Between the pizza van and the gate to the block of flats, there is a small private road. Take this road which leads you into the property. You will see a car park on your left a few metres ahead and the house will appear further in front of you. Park in the car park.
